Free SAP BASIS Online Tutorials | SAP BASIS System Landscape and Architecture

SAP Basis refers to the administration of SAP system that includes activities like installation and configuration, load balancing, and performance of SAP applications running on Java stack and SAP ABAP. This includes the maintenance of different services related to database, operating system, application and web servers in SAP system landscape and stopping and starting the system. Want to learn SAP BASIS by experts, see SAP BASIS training with experienced and real time implementation.
SAP system landscape is defined as an arrangement of SAP servers. Ideally, in a SAP environment, a three-system landscape exists. A system landscape consists of Development Server (Dev), Production Server (PROD), and Quality Assurance server (QAS).
SAP Architecture is defined as a technology framework of SAP system and it changes with time unlike the system landscape. SAP Architecture changes with new software like SAP ECC 6.0, the most recent one.
The following is a request in SAP System Landscape:
DEVELOPMENT >>>> Quality >>>> PRODUCTION
The following figure represents SAP three tier system landscape where work flows from Dev > QAS > PROD and not in backward direction.
Let us now discuss the system landscape:
Sandbox server: When a project is implemented, at the initial stages, a sandbox server is used where all the customization, configuration is performed.
Development server: Next is to save the configuration in development server and saved in workbench requests and this has to be transported to Production server.
Production server: You can consider it as the final or the most refined stage where the work is done when project is in production/go live. All the changes that are required by the client are performed in the DEV environment and later, the request is transported to production.
SAP System 3-Tier Architecture
The image given below shows 3-tier architecture of the SAP system. The presentation layer is the topmost one. This contains the device/application to control the SAP system. This can include mobile devices, end user systems or SAP GUI or web browser based client.
The presentation layer communicates with the application server to perform all the processing and which is known as brains of an SAP system.
The bottom layer is called the database layer. This is responsible to store all the data. The database of SAP system is kept on a separate server for performance and security reasons.
The presentation layer consists of different components for ABAP (see SAP ABAP training by experts to learn) and JAVA that enables the communication and processing of data in SAP system.
The key components of the presentation layer include the following:
Message Server − This is used to manage communication between distributed dispatchers in the ABAP system.
Message Server − This is used to manage server processes and JAVA dispatchers. It is used to manage communication within JRE.
Dispatcher Queue − This is used to store multiple work process types.
Dispatcher − This is used to distribute the requests to the work processes.
Memory Pipes − This is used to manage communication between ICM and ABAP work processes.
Enqueue Server − This is used to handle logical locks set by the executed Java application program. (Learn to program by Java training).
Java Dispatcher − This is responsible to receive the client requests via presentation layer and forward to the server process.
Gateway − This is used to manage communication between SAP system and external systems.
ABAP Work processes − This separately executes dialog steps in R/3 applications separately.

SAP GUI is a client tool which is used to access remote central server and runs on different operating systems like Microsoft Windows, UNIX, Mac, etc. This is used to manage and access SAP applications like SAP ECC and SAP Business Intelligence System. Want to learn Basis by experts see SAP BASIS training for more details.
As mentioned, there are three different GUIs available and we can select the right version based on the requirement. The following scenario can help you find a suitable SAP GUI:
When users are working rarely in the SAP system: Suppose most of the users fall in this category, then it is suggested to use SAP GUI for HTML format. This allows you to save effort and money for client deployment.
When users are working mostly in the SAP system: In a case such as this, SAP GUI for Windows or SAP GUI for Java is recommended.
When users are ABAP developers: For ABAP developers, it is recommended that they use SAP GUI for Windows. SAP ABAP training by SAP Trainings online gives you the best practical methods teaching.
When users use operating systems other than Microsoft: It is recommended they use SAP GUI for Java and HTML or they can use the SAP GUI for Windows on a remote server.
When users are integrating Dynpro transactions to the portal: It is recommended they use SAP GUI for HTML. This allows you to integrate classic Dynpro-based applications into the portal easily.
SAP Instance and SID
A SAP instance is when you install and configure a SAP system. This instance defines a group of resources — memory, processors and other resources in the system. This allows users to login to the SAP system and share the same resources.
SAP instance is managed by CCMS. Users can login to the SAP system using an instance.
A SAP system can consist of one or more instances you can set up a SAP system with a single instance with only one CCMS or you can configure a system with two or more separate instances in client/server environment.
Configuring a SAP Instance
You need to follow these steps to configure a SAP instance:
Step1: You need to define separate directories for UNIX, AS/400, or Microsoft Windows NT server on which the instance is to run.
Step2: You can use shared file system.
Step3: or each instance, there are entries created in operating system configuration files (/etc/services, /etc).
Step4: There are communication entries created in the host.
Step5: For each instance, start and system profiles are created.
Step6: For each instance, operating system users are installed.
Creating an instance for one server
You need to follow these steps to create an instance for one server:
Step1: To create an instance, you should first define the mode of operation.
Step2: To create an instance, go to CCMS > Configuration or use Transaction code RZ04.
Step3: Go to instances/operation modes as shown in shown in the screenshots below.

Why SAP BASIS Support is Needed? SAP BASIS E-learning

SAP BASIS is vast, complex and almost invisible when it is working correctly and it is absolutely crucial to companies. All the administration and maintenance tasks throughout SAP landscape is handled by SAP BASIS, from overseeing users, to overseeing the flow of data between different versions of entities.
Because of its complexity and its importance to core business processes SAP BASIS administration is no fields for mere button pushers. Every organization needs SAP BASIS support team with a deep understanding of both technical and strategic side of SAP system and business along with the ability to coordinate between IT department and the executive layer. Here are the four reasons why business process needs a strong, effective, and efficient SAP Basis support team:
SAP requires lot of supervision: The complexity and time commitment required for SAP Basis support can vary greatly from use case to use case, but even a relatively small SAP landscape requires daily maintenance to stop minor issues from growing into major problems. A typical company will have several separate SAP systems running for production, development, testing and SAP BASIS training, and perhaps a high-availability system mirroring production on top of everything else. Admins will have to keep all of these systems updated, optimized and communicating with each other. They’ll need to perform daily backups and verify their integrity, and safely install new patches and updates.
When the system sends out an alert or the users can’t access the system, SAP administrators need to be able to act immediately. SAP landscape is as unique, and no two competitive businesses are exactly alike. A full understanding of what makes your SAP system tick takes time. You won’t have if something breaks when you can’t get a hold of your SAP Basis tech.
SAP BASIS holds IT together: organizations have many SAP systems and all depend on SAP BASIS. SAP ecosystem may run on a variation of operating systems, utilize multiple database platforms, and use a unique architecture to move data across the country and the world.
Administering the software that facilitates this flow of information takes a unique mindset. A lot of SAP Basis professionals are strong technically, but don’t fully understand how a business is run and how the business units work together. They might be great at fixing errors or tweaking performance, but they’ll struggle to provide the guidance you need, and your business will suffer.
SAP BASIS support is the lynchpin of IT team: A single SAP BASIS administrator may manage the whole system, from OS to the application layer. In a large entity SAP BASIS support team compliment many IT professionals, including server engineers, developers, IT security pros and other administrative staff.
In either case, your SAP Basis support team needs to be comfortable in a leadership role, with the organizational and people skills to coordinate with other IT professionals. SAP Basis admins need to direct server engineers and database engineers, coordinate with support staff to monitor end user complaints and feedback, keep in touch with security staff to prevent breaches and control access, and work alongside the functional staff on both new initiatives and system support.
Leadership is important for any project. Imagine what goes into an SAP HANA migration (Want to learn SAP HANA by experts see SAP HANA training for details) from an overseas server to an onshore SAP HANA cloud: the new system needs to be built and tested; the data needs to be securely backed up and transferred while the source system is still running and collecting data. The new data that has been added during that process needs to be transferred and, finally, the end users need to be switched to the new system, all with minimal disruption. And that doesn’t even touch on all the pre-launch training and tweaking required.
SAP BASIS can anticipate future needs: SAP BASIS admin knows SAP system better; they learn your SAP landscape inside and out, including available resources, workload, and rate of growth.
